Mediator: Ena Garden
Review written by: Patricia Bentley
What an interesting afternoon. Our Mediator, Ena Garden (pictured), is very much appreciated. Some great topics were raised which created rather heated debate at times, but as the quote says, "You don’t have to agree with me, but I am entitled to give my opinion".
Questions were raised as to the certainty of recorded history versus information gathered upon visiting sites like Port Arthur in Tasmania. Are historic tourist attractions made to have an over exaggerated past simply to spread the word and attract visitors?
Discussion also took place around the family situation of today. What is lacking in our communities which may be contributing to the behaviour of young people? Most parents work, so where does that leave the children and teenagers after school? It was felt that the lack of youth clubs, television, lack of supervision and lack of discipline all contributed. Should National Service be re-introduced?
By far the most controversial topic was "Should gay couples be allowed to have and raise children?" We were all raised in a different era and sometimes it becomes very difficult to accept such radical changes in our society. Whatever our opinions may be, on many occasions, to be or not to be is well and truly out of our hands, but it sure makes for interesting conversation at U3A.
