249. RELIGIONS OF THE WORLD - Hinduism

Presented by:  Grace McAlpine

Review written by:  Ena Garden

As we look at major religions, we will consider their cultural and social implications, their contribution to learning, the arts, architecture, literature, music and laws of government within the countries where they have influence. We will learn of their festivals and holy days, their sacred places and pilgrimages to the rivers and mountains.

The subject this month was Hinduism, the most popular Indian religion. It has no central authority or specific founder and has 1,000s of Gods. The Dravidians worshipped fertility gods and goddesses then the social structure developed into a caste system from the Brahmins [priests] down to the Untouchables. The major gods are Brahma - the creator, Vishnu -  the preserver of the universe, and Krishna - the supreme lord.

Hindus believe in reincarnation and that the way of knowledge is through meditation. They are vegetarians and the society is patriarchal.  Women must bear sons and are subject first to their father, then husband and finally son. Cows are considered sacred, killing a cow is as bad as killing a priest.

All those who attended enjoyed this talk by Grace McAlpine (pictured), and all are looking forward to hearing about Jainism next month.
